Today, the House introduced a spending bill that includes the Hyde Amendment, a decades-old policy rider that bans insurance coverage of abortion for people enrolled in Medicaid. The spending bill comes just days after the two-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, which has decimated the landscape for abortion nationwide.
Our president Nourbese Flint released the following statement:
“It comes as no surprise that anti-abortion politicians included the Hyde Amendment in the federal spending bill, but that doesn’t make it any less reprehensible. It’s downright cruel to deny people care through coverage bans that make abortion care unaffordable and inaccessible. Two years after the Dobbs decision, abortion care is almost entirely out of reach for half the country and the Supreme Court remains hellbent on allowing anti-abortion extremists to deny us our freedom and autonomy. Our healthcare system already fails Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, and abortion coverage bans like the Hyde Amendment make this dire situation even worse. For more than a decade, All* Above All and women of color have boldly and unapologetically led the movement to end this punishing policy once and for all. And we’re joined by the majority of voters who agree that Hyde’s time is up – it’s high time that Congress starts listening.“
