Moments ago, the House of Representatives voted to advance legislation containing massive cuts to Medicaid and health care provisions to advance Trump’s tax package – namely the extension of tax breaks.
The provisions would result in 10.3 million people losing Medicaid coverage by 2034 and 7.6 million people going uninsured, according to a partial analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). It would also boost the incomes of the richest 10% of Americans while lowering the incomes of the lowest 10%, CBO assessed and the bill’s changes to Medicaid could result in as many as 7.6 million Americans losing health insurance over the next 10 years, according to initial estimates by the CBO. About $698 billion would be cut from the program.
All* Above All President Nourbese Flint issued the following statement in response:
“The bill that just passed out of the House of Representatives isn’t ‘beautiful.’ It’s an ugly and cruel mess,” Flint says. “Bottom line: it’s taking away folks’ basic benefits in order to fund tax breaks for some of the wealthiest people in America.
“It cuts billions from Medicaid, takes care away from millions of families, it gets rid of food assistance for kids and communities that need it. And if that isn’t enough, anti-abortion extremists have made sure it includes a measure completely defunding Planned Parenthood.
“If we want to help more families, moms, and babies, this is not the way. This one big ugly bill is going to harm families, people making ends meet, and anyone who is trying to get basic care in this country.”
Medicaid insures 18 million women, 1.2 million LGBTQ+ adults, and nearly half of our nation’s children.
In March, Nourbese wrote a piece for Ms. Magazine about the proposed cuts to Medicaid. You can read her op-ed here.
