Women’s Health, Rights & Justice Advocates Unite to Launch Bold New Campaign: All* Above All
Campaign seeks to restore and sustain abortion coverage for low-income women
(Washington, DC) – Today reproductive justice, women’s health and youth advocates from across the country announce the launch of an innovative campaign, All* Above All, to restore and sustain abortion coverage for low-income women. With its uplifting vision, its honest, raw and authentic creative approach, its digital and grassroots tactics and its inclusive, diverse coalition, All* Above All provides a new generation with a bold and innovative outlet to take action.
This vibrant new effort disrupts conventional movement strategies to activate the rising electorate. It engages young people 18 to 30 years old and people of color to realize their collective power and shatter stereotypes about their willingness to mobilize on these issues. As those who are most affected when politicians withhold abortion coverage, millennials and people of color are standing up to the continued avalanche of attempts to disenfranchise them and their decision-making. They are taking a stand to ensure Medicaid coverage for all pregnancy care, including abortion. The multi-year effort will leverage social and digital engagement, grassroots activities, national paid and earned media, and policy change.
“All* Above All reflects the positive and powerful belief that each of us, not just some of us, must be able to make the important decision of whether to end a pregnancy,” said Jessica González-Rojas, Executive Director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. “For too long, politicians have been allowed to deny a woman’s abortion coverage just because she is poor. Too many Latinas have been denied the health care they need. Together we are standing up to say ‘enough.’”
“As we saw recently in Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio, individuals across the country are sick and tired of measures that politicize women’s reproductive health. All* Above All is a coordinated effort to defend against further abortion restrictions and to proactively secure support from the public, thought leaders, and elected officials to restore insurance coverage for abortion for all women regardless of their income level,” added Jessica Arons, President & CEO of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project.
“All* Above All pushes back on the long-running urban legend that funding abortion coverage is some kind of political third rail. This campaign offers people a fresh approach to declare their support for bold action to change these policies,” ” said Kierra Johnson, Executive Director of Choice USA.
“A majority of young people already support access to safe abortion care in their communities, and hundreds of thousands are actively mobilizing their peers and holding elected officials accountable. Through campaigns such as All* Above All, young activists will help lead the way to a time when all women will have access to safe, affordable health care, including abortion services,” said Debra Hauser, President, Advocates for Youth.
Since the passage of the Hyde amendment in 1976, Congress has withheld coverage for abortion services from women insured through the Medicaid program—now numbering nine million women of reproductive age. This policy creates unreasonable obstacles for women and disproportionately affects women of color, low-income women, immigrants, and rural women. In recent years some elected officials have also worked to deny abortion coverage and push abortion out of reach financially for as many women as possible. All* Above All believes that whether a woman has private or government-funded health insurance, she should have coverage for the full range of pregnancy-related care, including abortion.
“At the end of the day, All* Above All is about creating a world where a woman struggling to make ends meet can make important, personal decisions about abortion based on what is best for her circumstances,” said Stephanie Poggi, Executive Director of the National Network of Abortion Funds.
All* Above All is an inclusive, diverse effort that is led by women’s health, reproductive justice and youth organizations including: Advocates for Youth*, Black Women’s Health Imperative, Center for Reproductive Rights, Choice USA*, Forward Together, Ibis Reproductive Health, Law Students for Reproductive Justice, Ms. Foundation for Women, National Abortion Federation, National Council of Jewish Women, National Institute for Reproductive Health, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health*, National Network of Abortion Funds*, National Women’s Health Network, Pro-Choice Resources and Reproductive Health Technologies Project*.
